The BMW M Motorsport teams Walkenhorst Motorsport and Schubert Motorsport started the DTM season with good results. At the DTM premiere for the new BMW M4 GT3 in Portimão (POR), BMW M works drivers Marco Wittmann (GER), Sheldon van der Linde (RSA) and Philipp Eng (AUT) finished in the points. Wittmann achieved the best result in fourth place in Sunday's race. With places seven and eight, Van der Linde was the only one of the three drivers to make it into the top ten in both races. After a strong race to catch up from 24th on the grid, Eng finished ninth on Saturday. Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, and Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, were on site in Portugal.
Van der Linde put in a consistently good performance throughout the weekend, was the fastest BMW M Motorsport driver in both qualifying sessions and scored ten points. After a retirement in Saturday's race, Wittmann came back very strongly on Sunday, showed good overtaking maneuvers in his BMW M4 GT3 and finished fourth to score twelve points. After catching up on Saturday, Eng retired in Sunday's race as a result of a collision at the start through no fault of his own. Esteban Muth (BEL) finished 14th twice in the second Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M4 GT3. The season starts on 21./22. May with the two races at the Lausitzring (GER).
