Four Porsche 963 start the six-hour race in Monza.

The FIA ​​World Endurance Championship WEC starts the second half of the season with race number five at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. In May, Porsche Penske Motorsport prepared for the 5.793-kilometer high-speed circuit in the Royal Park by testing the Porsche 963 for several days. The factory team is again sending two hybrid prototypes into the six-hour race in Italy. As usual, the vehicle with starting number 5 will be shared by Michael Christensen from Denmark, Frenchman Frédéric Makowiecki and American Dane Cameron. The regular line-up, with their works driver colleagues Kévin Estre (France), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) and André Lotterer (Germany), will also be deployed in the number 6 sister car.

As in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, four Porsche 963s will again be competing in Monza: in addition to the two works cars and the Hertz Team Jota vehicle, for the first time the German customer team Proton Competition will also be bringing one of the more than 500 kW (680 hp) strong hybrid prototypes at the start. It will be driven by Porsche works driver Gianmaria Bruni from Italy, Brit Harry Tincknell and Neel Jani. In 2016, the Swiss driver won the Le Mans 24-hour race at the wheel of the 919 Hybrid together with Porsche and was crowned FIA World Endurance Champion in the same year.
