The Chinese automaker's Ora Funky Cat EV becomes the GWM Ora 03, and the Wey Coffee 01 plug-in hybrid will be called the GWM Wey 05.
Goodbye Funky Cat and Coffee, hello 03 and 05.
Great Wall Motor, the Chinese automaker that has entered the European market with the Ora and Wey brands, is changing its naming conventions and revamping its brand strategy.
GWM will be the sole consumer brand, with Wey and Ora as product lines within it, the automaker said. The shift “signifies GWM's commitment to a more cohesive and recognizable global presence, particularly in the European market,” the automaker.
Great Wall is one of several Chinese brands that have entered Europe in recent years, most focused on full-electric or electrified vehicles. Like SAIC's MG brand and BYD, Great Wall is selling cars through a traditional distributor/dealer model rather than through direct-to-consumer sales.
Great Wall briefly produced vehicles in Europe after it opened a factory in Bulgaria in 2012 to assemble SUVs, pickups and city cars. The plant closed in 2017.
