The Porsche 911 GT3 R driven by works drivers Matt Campbell from Australia, Mathieu Jaminet from France and Felipe Nasr from Brazil finished the 12-hour race at Sebring in fifth place. The trio at the wheel of the nine-eleven with starting number 9 from Pfaff Motorsports thus retained the lead in the GTD Pro Championship after round two of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The WeatherTech Racing vehicle, which is identical in construction, came in sixth.
The 70th edition of the long-distance classic in Florida turned out to be unusually static, despite the total of seven caution phases. Positions in the GT classes were already taken shortly after the start with outside temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius in the “Sunshine State” of Florida. The experienced and strong Porsche customer teams all acted flawlessly and with good strategy, but the cars never came within reach of the podium.
In the GTD category, American Rob Ferriol, Brit Katherine Legge and her compatriot Stefan Wilson finished eighth. After a setback in free practice, Team Hardpoint made a solid comeback in the race. The 367 kW (500 hp) nine-eleven with the number 99 was irreparably damaged in an accident on Thursday. The customer team from Virginia set up a replacement chassis in time for the start of the 12-hour race. The Daytona-winning team Wright Motorsports also had bad luck. Starting driver Zacharie Robichon from Canada, who had driven the number 16 car to pole position in the GTD class the day before, came into the pits after just three laps. The technicians found a defect in the differential. The repairs, which lasted more than 30 minutes, threw the Ohio State team back 18 laps. The Wright Motorsports 911 GT3 R finished the race in tenth place.
Round three of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship takes place on April 10th on the spectacular street circuit in the Californian port city of Long Beach.
