The idea for this factory one-off came about at a meeting between representatives of the Porsche Club of America, Alexander Fabig, today Head of Individualization and Classic at Porsche, and designer Grant Larson from Style Porsche. For the sake of secrecy, the vehicle was internally called "Project Grey". The nickname is reminiscent of “Project Gold”, the 911 Turbo (type 993) with an air-cooled engine that Porsche Classic built in 2018 from original parts. However, the main source of inspiration for the 911 Classic Club Coupe was the 911 Sport Classic (type 997) presented in 2009. This small series, painted in sport classic grey, with a double dome roof, ducktail and exclusive interior details, quickly achieved cult status and has long been a sought-after collector's item.
"No. 001/001” – the plaque on the dashboard sums up the rarity of this Porsche model: the experts at Porsche Classic have created an absolutely one-of-a-kind model under the guiding principle of the newly launched Porsche special request programme. The Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe was created from a used 911 Carrera built in 1998 (Type 996) within two and a half years. American spelling without an accent, because the vehicle is intended for the Porsche Club of America (PCA), the oldest and largest club for the sports car brand.
The special features of the vehicle include the paintwork in sport gray metallic, the double dome roof, the Fuchs rims and the fixed rear spoiler in the ducktail style of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (1972). Many details in the exterior and interior are individualized with the typical PCA club blue. The center panels of the sports seats, like the door panels, are made of elaborately crafted woven leather in a houndstooth pattern. The vehicle was also technically and partially also optically converted into a GT3 of the second generation and now draws 280 kW (381 hp) from a displacement of 3.6 litres. The chassis and brakes also come from the GT3.
