The drive of the Fiat 500X Hybrid and Fiat Tipo Hybrid combines a turbo petrol engine from the FireFly series with a 48-volt electric motor. The combustion engine produces an output of 96 kW (130 hp) and a maximum torque of 240 Newton meters from four cylinders and a displacement of 1.5 liters. The electric motor has an output of 15 kW (20 hp). Power is transmitted by an automatic transmission with double clutch and seven gears. The advanced hybrid technology combines the petrol engine with a belt starter generator. The system supports moving off and optimizes the efficiency and dynamics of the vehicle. Fiat 500X Hybrid and Fiat Tipo Hybrid are also able to drive at low speed up to about 3 km fully electric with the combustion engine switched off. They are the first models from the brand to use hybrid technology to keep the combustion engine completely decoupled for up to 47 percent of the time when idling when measuring consumption according to the WLTP cycle. In the urban cycle, the share increases to 62 percent.
The advantages of the new 48-volt drive are also great in the new Fiat 500X Hybrid. Fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions are up to 11 percent lower (according to the WLTP cycle). In addition, the new Fiat 500X Hybrid and the new Fiat Tipo Hybrid are very comfortable to drive thanks to the practically imperceptible interaction between the electric motor and the combustion engine. The electric motor provides its torque practically from a standing start. This supports the performance of the combustion engine when moving off and minimizes the so-called turbo lag when shifting gears or accelerating sharply. This makes the Fiat 500X Hybrid and Fiat Tipo Hybrid the fastest models in their respective series. The new Fiat Tipo Hybrid accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 9.1 seconds. The new Fiat 500X Hybrid completes this discipline in 9.4 seconds. Likewise, when driving off in electric mode, the combustion engine is automatically started if the accelerator pedal is strongly accelerated.
In addition, the electric motor shifts the operating point of the combustion engine so that it can also achieve its maximum efficiency when the vehicle is cold. This feature shortens the warm-up time of the catalytic converter, further reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The hybrid drive also offers other advantages, not least when starting off in electric mode. This process is gentle, quiet and emission-free. Depending on the power requirement and the state of charge of the battery, the journey in the Fiat 500X Hybrid or Fiat Tipo Hybrid can be continued fully electrically (E-Launch). Both models have a creep function (e-creeping) that performs short forward movements without pressing the accelerator pedal. This occurs, for example, in stop-and-go traffic (e-queuing). The Fiat 500X Hybrid and Fiat Tipo Hybrid are also capable of electrically parking forwards or backwards (e-parking). Through recuperation, the hybrid system recovers energy both when braking and when coasting and charges the battery.
