Porsche Mission S – the essence of the sports car reinterpreted

| As part of its strategic realignment, “Sports Car Factory ’35,” Porsche is presenting a groundbreaking vision model as a first glimpse into the brand’s further developed design identity. “A Porsche must be recognizable as a Porsche at first glance,” says Dr. Michael Leiters, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “With the Mission S, we are offering a preview of the ideas and design features that will shape Porsche in the coming years.” The focus is on the authentic, consistent, and timeless design of the vehicle and a particularly intense connection between driver and car. “At the same time, the Mission S represents a mid-engine super sports car platform positioned above the 911 – not as a one-off hypercar, but as a permanent and diverse additional offering for our customers,” adds Leiters. The Porsche Mission S celebrates its world premiere today, Thursday, at a location of significant historical importance to the company: a pier in Queens, New York, with a view of the Manhattan skyline. The first images of the mid-engined Porsche 550 Spyder on this pier went around the world in 1953. As the brand's first supercar, the 550 Spyder remains a defining symbol of the company's identity. It also laid an important foundation for Porsche's popularity and success in the USA. By choosing this location, Porsche underscores the significance of its history for the future of design and brand – a commitment also reflected in the Mission S. Authentic, consistent, and timeless: These three terms define the strategic framework for the further development of Porsche's iconic design identity. "The Mission S is the result of a forward-looking, holistically conceived design strategy," says Tobias Sühlmann, Head of Style Porsche. "This visionary model demonstrates a fundamental strategic direction that we will soon translate into our future product portfolio." The Mission S combines a powerful mid-engine supercar platform with a clear design language inspired by historic Porsche icons. Inside, the focus is on purism, driver-oriented ergonomics, and a future-oriented symbiosis of analog and digital controls. The deliberate reduction of digital surfaces prioritizes the direct interaction between driver and vehicle. Exterior design: purist design language with innovative design features. The exterior of the Porsche Mission S translates typical Porsche design features into the future. The characteristic torpedo fenders, the iconic roofline, and the dramatic width-to-height ratio are key elements of the sports car architecture. The result is so-called "floating volumes": flowing, suspended volumes and surfaces that form a powerful, technically inspired sculpture and effectively showcase the performance character of the sports car. Particular attention is paid to the clean lines. A continuous main line connects the light signatures at the front and rear, creating an overall appearance that is both striking and harmonious. Above this line, the surfaces emphasize muscularity and dynamism, while the areas below reveal technical functions and underscore the lightweight construction philosophy. Historic Porsche icons serve as a source of inspiration. The round headlights and the distinctive fenders, which not only incorporate the typical torpedo design but also give the vehicle a commanding presence, are reminiscent of the 911. The seams that blend into the light graphics reference the G-model. The flat front end borrows from the GT1, while the dynamic roofline below the rear wing is reminiscent of the 959. On the Mission S, this roofline extends seamlessly all the way to the rear. Another highlight is the car-in-car concept at the rear, derived from the GT1. All elements are given a contemporary interpretation and combined to create a harmonious overall impression. The show car's proportions are defined by its mid-engine architecture. The engine sits centrally in the vehicle, a positioning that allows for the characteristic flyline. Technical details such as the Porsche 917's fan as a cooling solution and the fully integrated active rear wing combine function and design in typical Porsche fashion. Another highlight is the wheel design: inspired by the iconic "dialer-dial" design of the 928, a new design concept was created, consistently focused on lightweight construction. The wheels of the vision model underscore the striking overall impression of the sports car. Interior: a consistent focus on the driver. Inside, the Porsche Mission S consciously returns to the core values of sports car engineering. The interior architecture is based on historic Porsche sports cars such as the 550 Spyder and the 356. Two defining lines run through the dashboard and doors. They convey the characteristic feeling of sitting "deep in the car" and create a visual connection to the exterior design. At the same time, a clear, timeless aesthetic is created, focusing attention on the essentials. A seamless transition between analog controls and digital solutions makes the interior both familiar and modern. Classic switches and buttons are combined with contemporary displays, creating an ergonomic user experience that blends the familiar with the future. The seats also follow this approach. New technical solutions, such as an integrated seatbelt buckle in the center bolster and repositioned electric adjustments, combine comfort, functionality, and motorsport DNA. With its white, gray, and red tones, the show car deliberately evokes the tradition of successful Porsche racing cars. The specially developed interior colors—firn white metallic, light red metallic, black chrome, and special black—reinterpret classic Porsche motorsport colors and underscore the visual connection to the brand's sporting core. Driver Experience: A Symbiosis of Analog and Digital Controls. In addition to the further developed interior architecture, the focus is clearly on the so-called "Driver Experience." The goal is to create an ideal symbiosis of analog and digital controls. Instead of additional displays and functions, the concept focuses on reduction, clarity and intuitive usability. The driver's axis forms the heart of the concept. The consistent alignment of all controls with the driver, along with a combination of haptic and digital feedback, creates a particularly direct user experience. Highlights include the five distinctive round instruments behind the steering wheel. The centerpiece is the tachometer with its analog needle and a display behind it. Depending on the driving mode, the tachometer moves closer to the driver to further enhance focus. The arrangement of the round instruments also adapts to the selected drive mode: tailored to the driver's needs in the chosen mode, the gauges are positioned side-by-side or one behind the other. Further innovations include the key fob, positioned to the left of the steering wheel as is typical for Porsche, and the new push-pull controls in the dashboard, which provide direct access to various comfort and driving functions. The reinterpreted Sport Chrono display also combines analog emotionality with digital precision. Porsche has deliberately omitted a permanently integrated center display and a fixed passenger display. Instead, a smartphone system compatible with MagSafe technology was designed to extend when needed. The user's personal smartphone can be used as a navigation or information display. A clearly structured and minimalist MyPorsche app provides access to all functions and also offers the option of selecting digitally inspired styles for the instrument cluster. The result is an interior concept that puts the driving experience at its core while offering maximum flexibility. The future of sports cars: Development of a mid-engine supercar platform . Above the iconic 911 sports car, Porsche is planning its first permanently available supercar lineup. The clear objective: the highest level of engineering and maximum flexibility. This is based on decades of motorsport experience, innovative and brand-defining technologies, and the groundbreaking design introduced with the Mission S. |
