Clearly designed surfaces and athletic shapes signal the outstanding performance potential of the BMW M3 Touring, as do the M-specific design features, which are consistently geared towards the functional requirements in terms of cooling air flow and aerodynamic balance. These include, above all, the vertically aligned, frameless BMW kidney grille, the large side air intakes, the powerfully modeled wheel arches and the wide side skirts, which together with the front and rear apron attachments form a band that runs around the entire vehicle and is finished in high-gloss black. Also characteristic are the M gills on the front side walls and the pairs of exhaust system tailpipes integrated into the left and right of the rear apron. Regardless of the exterior color chosen, the roof of the BMW M3 Touring comes in high-gloss black as standard. The standard roof rails and the model-specific air deflector element mounted on the roof spoiler and known as the Gurney are also painted in the same colour. A roof in the body color and an M Carbon exterior package are optionally available.
The version of the in-line six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology developed for the Competition models in the series generates a maximum output of 375 kW/510 hp and a maximum torque of 650 Nm. The 3.0-litre engine is characterized by its typical M high-rev characteristics and its linear power delivery that continues up to high load ranges. It also forms the basis for the drive unit of the new BMW M4 GT3 long-distance racing car. The cooling system and oil supply are designed for particularly high longitudinal and lateral acceleration values when used on the racetrack. The M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps enriches the performance experience with a particularly emotional drive sound. The engine transmits its drive torque to an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, which offers a choice of three shift programs and can be operated using shift paddles on the steering wheel. The power is transferred to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, which is combined with an Active M differential in the rear axle drive. The need-based distribution of the drive torque to all four wheels optimizes traction as well as the agility and driving stability of the BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive, which accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. It takes 12.9 seconds to sprint from zero to 200 km/h.
The electronic limit for the top speed can be raised from 250 to 280 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package. which offers three shift programs to choose from and can be operated using shift paddles on the steering wheel.
