When viewed from the side, surfaces create a unique play of light. The more the focus is on the shoulder line. In the T-model, the progressive roof pull in combination with the inclined rear window underlines a sportiness without functional restrictions. The radiator grille typical of the brand characterizes the front. All models have a central star. The basic model has a central star with lamellae. The Avantgarde also features decorative elements in the slats and chrome frames around the radiator grille and apron. The distinguishing feature of the AMG Line is the diamond grille with a star design in chrome. The design of the rear is typical of a Mercedes-Benz sedan. In the sedan, the rear lights are for the first time in two parts in the C-Class, the light functions are divided into the side wall and rear lid lights.
The instrument panel is divided into an upper and lower area: a wing profile with new, flattened round nozzles. The driver's area is marked by a high-resolution LCD screen. It stands free and appears to float in front of the wing profile and the decorative surface. The paradigm shift towards digitality is also clear with the central display: the vehicle functions can be controlled via the high-quality touchscreen.
In the new C-Class, the four-cylinder petrol engine (M 254) with an integrated starter generator (ISG) of the second generation with up to 15 kW additional power and 200 Nm more torque celebrates its premiere. In the M 254, Mercedes-Benz has for the first time combined all the innovations of the modular engine family of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines in one unit. The completely newly developed segment turbocharger was the result of the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz turbocharger development and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team.
The spearhead of the measures aimed at further improving efficiency is the new diesel with an integrated starter generator of the second generation. In addition to the electrification, which also includes the use of an electric refrigerant compressor for the air conditioning, these are the most important changes that enable an output of up to 195 kW plus 15 kW boost.
The fourth generation of plug-in hybrids will follow soon after the launch. Using the same basic engines, electrification is taking another big step here. With an electric drive power of 95 kW (129 PS) and a purely electric range of around 100 kilometers, the plug-in hybrid models of the C-Class will in many cases and on many days be on the move purely electrically without the use of the internal combustion engine. Diesel plug-in hybrids as sedans and T-models will follow.
